Sea Surface Wind/Stress Vector
نویسندگان
چکیده
Definition Wind is air in motion and is basically a vector quantity with a magnitude (speed) and a direction. Ocean surface stress is another vector quantity closely related to wind; it is the turbulent transfer of momentum between the ocean and the atmosphere. Their different applications are summarized in the section "Scientific Significance".

Satellite-based observations of surface turbulent stress during severe weather
Vector surface turbulent stresses are estimated from vector winds determined from space-borne scatterometers. Scatterometer vector winds differ subtly from in situ observations of vector winds. These differences are exaggerated for severe storm conditions, which is advantageous for determining surface stress. A physically based model for surface stress is developed to link surface turbulent str...
متن کاملDirectional Wind–Wave Coupling in Fully Coupled Atmosphere–Wave–Ocean Models: Results from CBLAST-Hurricane
The extreme high winds, intense rainfall, large ocean waves, and copious sea spray in hurricanes push the surface-exchange parameters for temperature, water vapor, and momentum into untested regimes. The Coupled Boundary Layer Air–Sea Transfer (CBLAST)-Hurricane program is aimed at developing improved coupling parameterizations (using the observations collected during the CBLAST-Hurricane field...

The wind drift motion of the water which is produced by the stress of the wind exerted upon the surface of the ocean is described by Ekmans theory (1905). Using the mean monthly values for the wind stress and SST, seasonal Ekman transport for the Persian Gulf was computed and contoured. The geostrophic winds have combined with the SST to estimate the effect of cooling due to Ekman transport o...
متن کاملEffect of surface waves on Charnock coefficient under tropical cyclones
[1] The dependence of the air-sea momentum flux on surface wave fields is investigated at very high winds under tropical cyclones. A coupled wave-wind model is applied to estimate the momentum flux under ten hurricanes in the western Atlantic Ocean during 1998–2003. The model explicitly calculates the wave-induced stress vector and the total wind stress vector from a given wind speed vector and...
متن کاملInvestigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...
